How to decorate your home using mirrors

Mirrors are underrated.  Sure they have a practical use, you look in the mirror to comb your hair, to check haven't put your top on backwards first thing in the morning and to make sure you don’t have any food stuck in between your teeth before you leave the house.  But mirrors shouldn’t just be used as a practicality in your home; they also have great potential for use as stylish home interior decor.

Mirrors come in all different shapes and sizes from very small and basic frameless mirrors to much larger and more ornate mirrors.  You don’t need to be vain to hang a mirror in each room in your home; mirrors have plenty more uses than simply gazing at your own reflection.  Hanging a large mirror in a room can not only create interest but also open up a room, make a space feel larger than it is, or reflect the view of something beautiful.

Here are a few ideas for ways that you can use mirrors in your interior design to create an attractive feature in your home.

Feature wall – Most rooms will usually have one wall that is a feature wall that creates interest and is the main focal point in the room.  Feature walls may be painted a different colour, display a large piece of art work... or perhaps hold a large and ornate mirror.  This works particularly well in a room with a fireplace so that you can place the mirror over the mantelpiece.

Collage of mirrors – Why settle for one mirror when you could use 5, 10 or even more?   Give a room a unique or quirky focal point by creating a wall of mirrors.  Either choose mirrors of a similar shape or style or deliberately choose many mismatching mirrors for a more unusual look.  This works particularly well in a hallway, on a staircase or in the bathroom.

Reflect beauty – Mirrors look great when placed near a door or window with a beautiful view.  Use a mirror by your back door or porch to reflect the nature outside back into your home.

Open up your room – Using a very large mirror or an assortment of large mirrors on one wall in a room or a hallway can give the illusion of the room being much larger than it actually is, especially when used in a very bright and airy space.
