Top Fall Tips To Prepare Your Garden For Winter

The arrival of fall provides the ideal opportunity to tidy the garden, get rid of dead vegetation leftover from summer, tidy your borders, clear out your gutters, and more.

The season is all about picking up and packing down the garden before winter arrives, clearing out rubbish, and raking up leaves. Here are our top tips to make the most of your fall garden.

1. Fall clean

Remove everything from your greenhouse, sweep out all the plant debris, and disinfect all the paths and staging, including giving the glass a good clean, to help prevent pests and fungal infection. Ventilate the greenhouse for a couple of days to dry it out thoroughly, and clean post and seed trays in preparation for spring.

2. Tidy up borders

To be sure you get a vibrant display come spring, dig up annuals, and plant your beds with pansies, Bellis daisies, and wallflowers. Once borders are clean and tidy, spread a good thick layer of compost, bark chips, or well-rotted manure.

3. Lawn enforcement

Remove any moss and add it to your compost heap or bin, and add moss killer to the lawn if there is a lot of it. Brush in a sandy top dressing afterwards, followed by fall lawn feed.

You can improve drainage and aeration around plants by making deep holes with a garden fork at 10cm intervals.

4. Make leaf mould

Leaf mould adds structure and organic matter to your soil and is a great way to recycle fallen leaves. Choose a sheltered spot that wont spoil the view of your garden and using wire mesh and wooden stakes, make a large bin. Fill with leaves, sprinkle with water and leave.

Once the leaves are crumbly, spread the mulch throughout your borders.
