Once the Christmas decorations are all put away, winter can seem much colder at the beginning of the year. But the dark evenings and cold days are an opportunity to get warm and cosy indoors, and there are few better ways to do that than with a rug.
You might want to create the ideal hygge atmosphere into your home, or maybe add some soft furnishings to a modern but spartan apartment. But how do know what to look for, and what will be the best fit for your space? Here are our tips for choosing a rug.
A rug can complete the look and feel of a room, so first you need to define the spacer it is going to sit in. Consider the size of the room, the amount of foot traffic, and how the rug will make sense of the usable space.
Rugs are ideal for open-plan living design, as they can help separate the room, keeping your WFH setup from the dining or living area without needing to erect partitions or room dividers.
Choose the size of your rug carefully, as if it is too big or too small, it may upset the balance of the room. In a living room, the ideal placement is when the front legs of all the furniture pieces comfortably fit on the edge of the rug.
For the bedroom, go for a rug that’s large enough for your bed and nightstands to sit on top of it, or two smaller rugs either side.
There are rugs made in a wide range of available materials, from wool to cotton to silk, and synthetic materials. Consider the foot traffic through the space to select the right material. Wool is recommended for areas that may see a good deal of wear and tear.
Synthetic rugs are preferable for homes with kids and pets, and where spills and stains may be a concern.
